Online Counselling

Our practice is excited to offer online counselling. We have already successfully offered online counselling for our clients who have started working with us in Toronto and have moved outside the city.

Now there are no boundaries. As long as we can find a compatible time to meet, we’re happy to see you online no matter where you are in the world.

Online Counselling

We’re here for you online!

  • Long before covid, we had already successfully facilitated online counselling to our clients who have moved out of Toronto for their post-secondary education. So we’re “pros” at online counselling!
  • People often considering online counselling as a great option if their teen is under the weather, if they are struggling to leave home or if they are geographically distant from our location at Runnymede and Bloor in Toronto.
  • Practically, all you need for online counselling is access to a private location, a working computer and a strong internet connection. Ear buds, headphones or a headset with a microphone are recommended.
Why counseling is more important now than ever!

Challenges and solution to online counselling

For many, meeting with a therapist over video or phone chat can sound like an awkward, unnatural experience. Counselling is a personal experience – won’t it feel weird to meet through a screen? Wouldn’t it be weird for my therapist to see me at home? What if someone in my house overhears my conversation? In this already stressful period, meeting with a therapist online can seem like an extra challenge on top of everything else.

As humans, meeting in person is the natural way to do things. Technology can feel like a weird barrier to having a meaningful counselling session. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be a strange experience. In fact, many people prefer the online format, since they can meet from the comfort of their couch, bed, or wherever!

In this blog are some common concerns and solutions our clients have found most helpful.

Some things to know about online counselling with us...

  • For our online video sessions, we are using a program called Janeapp telehealth. It is HIPAA, PHIPA, and PIPEDA compliant. All that to say, it is safe and secure.
  • We will store your credit card information in Janeapp (our booking and charting software program) which is secure. The card will be charged at the end of the session.
  • Our policies for charging for late or missed sessions are the same for both in person and online clients. We ask for a minimum of 24 hours notice for cancelled sessions. Cancelled within the 24 hour window, it’s 50% of the fee and missed altogether is 100% of the fee.
  • If you are in Ontario, we are happy to work with you. We’re not regulated to work outside of Ontario.
  • If you live outside of the city of Toronto, we will need local emergency contacts for you. This is not 911 as that will lead us only to our local response options. We’ll need the local numbers for your police, paramedics and firefighters.
  • We can’t accept new clients online who are suicidal or a potential harm to themselves or others.

Online therapy for teens is the same as in-person therapy, only it’s conducted digitally. Virtual counselling services partner with trusted online platforms to provide safe, confidential access to online counselling for teens. You schedule a meeting for a time when you have a private space and can speak comfortably.

Virtual therapy for teens involves clicking a link and joining the meeting. From there, virtual counselling sessions proceed according to whether it’s an online family counselling session or virtual therapy for teens.

Online counseling: Compassion meets comfort

Reaching out for therapy can feel daunting, but it’s a decision that’s helped countless teenagers and families navigate life’s joys and challenges. The digital age might be new, but it’s the realm of a new generation.

Online teen counselling is a way to provide virtual therapy for teens — so long as you have an internet connection, you can use online psychotherapy. There are plenty of reasons to choose online psychotherapy, including:

  • Difficulty travelling to or from appointments: You can do virtual therapy anywhere with the internet.
  • Comfort and confidentiality: Do your therapy sessions privately from your own home.
  • Distance and security: Many people participating in therapy prefer to start therapy online, especially with social anxiety.
  • Creates a safe space online: Much of the digital world is troublesome in families with teenagers, and online services give you somewhere safe to exist virtually.
